Are your gums causing your joint pain?

A recent study conducted at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry revealed that periodontitis, aka gum disease, may produce harmful bacteria that can travel throughout the body and cause symptoms associated with Alzheimer's disease, aspiration pneumonia, and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The chief symptom of RA is chronic, severe joint pain.

The study was presented last year during a meeting of the American Association of Anatomists in Orlando, Fla. and while the evidence is not conclusive, researchers believe it provides strong supports for increased, regular oral health habits.

The specific bacteria identified as the culprit is known as Porphyromonas gingivais, or P. gingivalis, which  "causes benign bacteria in the mouth to change their activities and further increase the immune response. Bacteria can travel from the mouth into the bloodstream through the simple act of chewing or brushing teeth," according to the report on the study.

Efforts are being made to develop compounds that may reduce or eliminate its role in the advancement of Alzheimer's, RA, and other diseases.

Preventing the spread of P. gingivalis may be as simple as brushing and flossing the teeth on a regular basis and visiting a dental hygienist for a professional cleaning at least once a year.

The other, most common causes of chronic joint pain include:

  • Age - As we grow older, the cartilage between our bones may wear down, causing pain in the joints, primarily the hands, knees, and hips.
  • Arthritis - Although there are over 100 types of arthritis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the most common.
  • Gout - A complex form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain and tenderness in the joints, often the joint at the base of the big toe.

Plus:

  • Bursitis
  • Viral infections
  • Tendinitis
  • Trauma

Regular visits to the dentist are always a good idea. But if you go to the dentist expecting or requesting a diagnosis for your chronic joint pain, you may be ahead of the times as the research is not conclusive
